1. Ask everyone involved to write what they would like to achieve in the following 6 categories (give 20 minutes for this activity):
Social: What do you want to accomplish socially? More nights out with friends? Meet new people? Join social groups?
Spiritual: Where do you need to expand with respect to your spiritual journey? Strengthen your relationship with God? Become more self-aware?
Physical: How do you wish to treat your body this year? More exercise and sleep? Healthier food and less toxic substances?
Intellectual: Do you get enough intellectual stimulation? Perhaps more Sudoku puzzles or crosswords? Maybe something more intense like joining a community debate group?
Emotional: Where are you on an emotional level? What can you do to bring yourself into balance?
Career/Financial/ Academic: What would you like to accomplish professionally this year? More money? A new job/career? Better attitude and effort at work? Networking?
I encourage you and your family to set goals within each of the 6 categories. They are all important for a well-balanced life and will meet your psychological needs. I also suggest you encourage everyone to think of their own goals and not to write down goals that others want for them.

Hands-On Food and Fun
At a cookout that I attended last spring, I was witness to a variety of activities that involved food as well. This, I thought, was an interesting way to incorporate fun and food together. First, there was a taffy pulling station that everyone could participate in. You could get a lesson straight from the taffy maker, and then pull your own taffy! It was a great way to blend food and fun together in a way that both adults and children can enjoy. This was certainly a treat, especially because we were able to take home a bag of homemade taffy with us! The taffy pull station was a great success because it was fun, food, and a party favor all in one.
Another first-hand example of how creative catering lights up an event, would be a charity fundraiser I went to for Muscular Dystrophy. Obviously the theme of the event was to raise money, mostly through a silent and live auction, for funds to support the treatment and research of the said disorder. At this event, the food was catered with typical banquet food, Filet Mignon, grilled asparagus, green salad, and soup. This was not the creative part, but still very enjoyable. The fun and memorable catering concept incorporated into the event was the cocktail bar! The pre-dinner drinks are important to any event, with the hope that more libations leads to more buyers. The cocktail stations at these types of events are pretty standard, with wine, beer, and a selection of liquors. This cocktail station was anything but standard! There was no bartender in site; instead, the hosts hired a team of -œmixologists-. Yes, this was new term for me as well, so I'll explain. A mixologist is a specialized bartender. They use science and chemistry to create magnificent cocktails and beverages that a person would not typically see in a regular restaurant or bar. False Claims
Like many groups, including the HIT'ers of the 'previous training generation,' they have changed the accepted definition of something (fitness) to suit themselves, and then declared themselves the 'fittest athletes on earth'. (moving the goal posts). When there is an acceptable standard for this, and you can compare Crossfitters to athletes, then this claim may be supported. until then, it simply remains an assertion. False claims about Crossfit being better able to promote muscle growth than conventional bodybuilding, despite the lack of proof, or even one documented case, of this occurring. False claims that doing just the WOD could take someone from a 250 deadlift to a 500-750 deadlift in two years, despite only pulling max deads four times a year (never happened, this from an interview with Greg Glassman). This is followed by the claim that if someone call pull a 500lbs. deadlift at heart rate x, then they should be capable of pulling 750 when rested (never happened, either) (yes, yet another case of bro-science) Link.

Yes, this is an ad hominem attack, and less than professional, but given Greg's long history of engaging in the same, he certainly deserves it in return. So when crossfitters start beating other athletes at actual sports, not just out-performing themselves at their own strength and conditioning program, then they will have something to brag about. In the real world of athletics, a S&C program is part of what gets you ready for a real sport, yet athletes around the world improve in this area every day. It is just not considered a big deal. Claims that "doing Crossfit WODs will make you competent in almost any real-world activity," yet at the Crossfit games, many CF'ers failed at swims, and some even failed at a softball throw.
